One of the Tawi-Tawi tourist destination on my to visit list is the oldest Mosque in the Philippines. With the help of Philippine Marines in Tawi-Tawi, Dave and I were able to visit Simunul Island, home of Sheikh Karim-ul Makhdum Mosque which holds the title of the oldest mosque in the country.
Located in Tubig Indangan, Simunul, Tawi-Tawi, Sheikh Karim-ul Makhdum Mosque is a National Historical Landmark by virtue of Republic Act 10573.
Quick History of the oldest mosque in the Philippines

Oldest mosque in the Philippines
Sheik Makhdum Mosque
In 1380, An Arabian missionary, judge and scholar Sheik Makdum reached the shores of Simunul Island in Tawi-Tawi and supervised the construction of Sheikh Karim-ul Makhdum Mosque. This monumental event marked the introduction of Islam faith in the Philippines.
We were lucky to have met Haji Omar Biste, a Simunul Island local. He was so kind to share the history of the mosque.
According to Haji Omar, Sheik Makdum is one among the seven brothers to come to Simunul Island in Tawi-Tawi via lumpang bassi, a vessel resembling a tub or basin. Among the seven brothers, Sheik Makhdum was the first one to come to the Philippines. He met Tawi-Tawi natives, preached Islam and established the religion. Haji added that Sheik Makhdum’s coming to the Philippines is different from Magellan. Sheik came to the Philippines without any armour. He came bringing the faith of Allah. He civilized the natives from Paganism and brought light, tranquility and morality. Sheik Makhdum built this National Landmark 200 years before Magellan set foot in the country.
Centuries-old Pillars
The original pillars which served as the foundation of Sheikh Karim-ul Makhdum Mosque are well-preserved. The 638 year old Ipil hardwood pillars showcase intricate designs and strength as it survived being exposed to sun and rain. Villagers believe that the entire Simunul Island will sink once these pillars are destroyed.
According to Haji Omar, there were instances in the past that locals get small pieces from the pillars. They put these small wood pieces on their drinking water as these are believed to have healing powers. Since the community is trying to protect and preserve the pillars, they decided to completely cover the two pillars with white cloth.
Sheik Makhdum’s Tomb
Burial site
Sheik Makhdum’s tomb
Few meters behind the mosque is a burial site where Sheik Makhdum’s tomb is located. An old man was kind enough to let us go inside site. We were told that the sands on Sheik Makhdum’s tomb remain intact regardless of the weather.
Seeing the oldest mosque in the Philippines and learning more about our Islam brothers was fascinating and meaningful at the same time. Locals from kids to Hajis were very welcoming and friendly. After almost an hour in the area, we had to immediately leave for our Travel with a Purpose Project that afternoon.
Special thanks to Dave of silverbackpacker.com. Ms.Ritz of HOPE and especially to Tawi-Tawi Philippine Marines for making this Tawi-Tawi trip possible.
Bacolod City is the capital of Negros Occidental province. Pegged as the City of Smiles for being a friendly city, it is also the home of the famous annual Maskarra festival. Aside from its friendly people and its highly anticipated festival, Bacolod is also popular for its specialty dish – Chicken Inasal.
Chicken Inasal is a marinated chicken pieces in a mixture of vinegar, pepper, annato and other spices then grilled using coals until done. The unique blend of marinade and basting make this typical grilled chicken extra sprecial! Today, chicken inasal has become popular and various restaurant chains serve this yummy Bacolod dish all over the Philippines.
Where to eat Chicken Inasal in Bacolod City? Manokan Country
Manokan Country is a popular food destination among locals and tourists. It is a food complex with wide array of open-air restaurants serving Chicken Inasal.
Located in Father Ferrero street, Manokan Country is just across SM City Bacolod’s north wing. If you are coming from any place in Bacolod, just hail a taxi and inform the driver to bring you to Manokan Country. If you are coming from Bacolod Ceres Bus terminal, cross the road and go to Silay terminal. From there, ride a jeepney bound to SM Bacolod. Just ask the driver to drop you to Manokan Country.
Manokan Country Map
After visiting The Ruins and several old houses in Silay City, I immediately headed to Manokan Country to try the authentic Bacolod’s Chicken Inasal. Manokan Country reminded me of Mahogany Market in Tagaytay. The only difference is that restaurants in Manokan Country offer Chicken Inasal instead of bulalo. (Related post: Where to eat cheap bulalo in Tagaytay?)
I observed that Aida’s Chicken restaurant was jam-packed with guests. Since there are many restaurants to choose from, I decided that Aida’s restaurant must be the place to eat Chicken Inasal in Manokan Country.
Aida’s Restaurant in Manokan Country Bacolod
Affordable Menu
Aida’s Chicken restaurant offers inasal dishes at an affordable price. The most expensive dish at Aida’s is chicken pecho which only costs 80 Php and garlic rice at only 30 Php. If you are a fan of chicken innards, they also serve atay, heart and tina-e (isaw).
I was surprised by the generous serving size of Aida’s chicken inasal! I have eaten inasal countless times in Manila but Aida’s was really way far better! It was perfectly cooked, juicy and flavorful! I even had to order my second rice to finish the generous serving of their chicken pecho.
I’m a fan of soy sauce with calamansi but I barely consumed the sauce I prepared. The inasal itself is very delicious and is already good without sauce.
Overall, I super enjoyed the gastronomic experience in Manokan Country. It was nice to eat Bacolod Chicken Inasal right where it originated. I would definitely return to Manokan Country on my next visit to Bacolod City!
If you are travelling to Dumaguete, Negros Oriental, there are a number of hotels and accommodations in the province. For budget travelers, comfort and affordability are important in choosing a hotel or accommodation. In Dumaguete, there is no other hotel aside from Go Hotels Dumaguete that offers comfort and good service at an affordable price.
Go Hotels Dumaguete Location
Go Hotels Dumaguete is located in Calindagan corner South Road in Dumaguete Central Business District Dumaguete City. The hotel is across various BPO offices and is also few meters away from Robinson’s Dumaguete mall. If you are coming from Dumaguete airport, Go Hotels Dumaguete can be reached via tricycle or habal-habal. Travel time from the airport to the hotel is 20 minutes and fare is approximately 120 Php. If you are coming from Ceres Bus Terminal in Dumaguete City, tricycle fare costs 40 Php.
I stayed in Go Hotels Dumaguete after my short day trip in Bacolod. I traveled from Bacolod to Dumaguete via ordinary bus which took roughly 7 long hours. Since I was not able to anticipate the long travel, I arrived in Dumaguete city at 11 PM and immediately took a tricycle to Go Hotels Dumaguete.
Check-in was a breeze
It was my first time to check-in in a Go Hotels chain. I was very excited as I’ve been reading good reviews about their hotels. When I arrived, I was surprised by its spacious open air lobby and reception area. It was simple and clean.
Go Hotels Dumaguete Reception area
Go Hotels Dumaguete Lobby
The check-in process was a breeze. Since I booked online prior to my trip, I just presented my Travelbook booking confirmation to the receptionist. She quickly verified my booking and immediately handed me the key card for my room.
Go Hotels Dumaguete room rates
Unfortunately, Go Hotels do not have published room rates. Their rates are more expensive if you will book closer to your check-in date. The below rates were generated via Go Hotels site as of this writing.
Room rates if you book via Go Hotels site 3 days prior to check-in date:
twin bedroom – 1220 Php
queen size bedroom – 1220 Php
Tip: Alternatively, hotel online booking sites such as Agoda and Travelbook offer cheaper Go Hotels Dumaguete rates.
Travelbook had this last-minute booking promo for twin room for only 710.12 Php instead of 900 Php. It was even cheaper than a queen size room. Being a budget traveler, I immediately booked the 710.12 Php promo rate.
Go Hotels Dumaguete twin room
I was assigned to a twin bedroom on the second level, just right beside the stairs. I should say that I did not really expect anything as I only paid 710.12 Php. Surprisingly, the room is spacious for a budget hotel. It was very clean and well maintained. The bed and pillows did not disappoint. It was good for the rates Go Hotels Dumaguete offers.
Room amenities include air-conditioning unit, cable TV, WiFi, soap and shampoo, in-room safe and hot and cold shower. Being a hotel for travelers and backpackers, the room does not have any work area. Nonetheless, if you are bringing work in Go Hotels, the fast internet connection will compensate the lack of work area. As for the toilet and bath, it was very clean. Aside from the soap and shampoo, bath towels and mats are provided.
The interior is simple and has this hip and cool vibe.
If you are a food lover or a smoker, eating inside your Go Hotels room is not allowed. There is this note in the room that eating areas are available at the hotel’s common areas. For smokers, there are designated smoking areas outside the ground lobby. If you dare to eat or smoke inside your room, prepare for a 1,000 Php cleaning charge. I do not have issues about these rules as these are for Go Hotels to maintain the quality of their rooms.
My Take on Go Hotels Dumaguete
Overall, I enjoyed my stay in Go Hotels Dumaguete. The receptionists were very accommodating and welcoming. I should say their approach and service are at par with receptionists of high-end hotels in Manila. For Go Hotels Dumaguete room rates, the room exceeded my expectations. It was spacious and clean. Dumaguete’s Go Hotels is indeed a budget friendly hotel in city!

Apart from the beautiful tourist attractions and welcoming people, Siquijor is also an ideal place to enjoy food. Backpacking in Siquijor Island will not be complete without trying its local restaurants. Aside from Marco Polo Restaurant, another must try food haven in Siquijor island is Baha Bar. This one of a kind bar and restaurant is located in Maite village and can easily be reached via motorbike or tricycle if you are coming from any of the resorts in the island.
Jen and I were lucky to have stayed at a nearby cheap accommodation which is literally few meters away from Baha bar. After touring Siquijor island and enjoying the beachfront of Golden Skyview resort, we visited Baha Bar for snack which turned out to be an early dinner for us.
Baha Bar Facade and Interiors
Baha bar’s eye-catching facade will truly attract anyone who is new to the island. The Spanish-Filipino inspired architecture and wooden fixtures matched with modern rural vibe make Baha bar stand out among other Siquijor restaurants. You also get this high-end feel once you get inside this open air restaurant bar. Interestingly enough, the entire place look cozy and homey for a restaurant bar in a remote island.
Baha Bar Menu
Being a restaurant bar, Baha bar offers various drinks such as cocktails and beers. They also offer non-alcoholic drinks. We personally loved their shake with homemade ice cream. For their food offerings, they serve soups, fish, pork and chicken dishes. They also serve burgers and pizza. If you are a vegan, don’t you worry as they also have vegetarian food on their menu.
Food, Accommodation and View Deck
Loy, one of the bar’s staff informed us that they are having this lechon and fish buffet for dinner. Surprisingly, Baha bar offers buffet meals every Friday for only 380 Php! Since Jen and I originally wanted to eat snack, we ordered their signature 12″ Baha Bar Pizza (330 Php) and Strawberry Vanilla shake (160 Php).
While waiting for the food, we decided to check-out the entire place. We discovered that Baha bar also offers accommodation for couples and families/group. The have Keady (3,000 Php), a cottage for two in the middle of a mini garden. They also have a huge accommodation (6,000 Php) for families or group facing Siquijor beach.
The bar has this sunset view deck where guests can simply enjoy the Siquijor beach view. Here’s one of the sunset photo I took from the view deck.
The 12″ Baha bar pizza is seasoned barbecue bites, ham and bacon mixed with onion, bell pepper, barbecue sauce and chopped parsley. The pizza did not disappoint! It was good and reasonably priced.
Baha bar is undoubtedly a popular food destination in Siquijor not only to Filipinos but also to foreign travelers. In fact, we were the only Filipino guests the time we visited the restaurant.
We enjoyed our Baha bar experience. The place and food were great! The staff was welcoming and accommodating. Will I recommend this Siquijor restaurant bar? Definitely YES!

If you are planning to visit Siquijor island, there are various tour packages available online. However, these Siquijor tour packages are quite expensive. Fortunately, there are cheaper ways to enjoy the breathtaking Siquijor. Instead of availing expensive tour packages, go directly to the island and arrange a tour package to the Siquijor tourism accredited tour guides/tricycle drivers.
In Siquijor port, there is a provincial tourism office reception area. Just ask the tourism officer for a copy of Siquijor map, list of accommodations and list of standard transportation tariff rates and tours. They provide these handouts for free. These will be helpful during your stay in Siquijor most especially if you decide to DIY tour the island.
There are tourism office accredited tricycle and van drivers waiting in the port. They usually approach visitors and offer the tour. Just make sure that you are dealing with the tourism accredited drivers. These guys are in Siquijor tourism uniform. If you are a solo traveler or a couple, a tricycle tour will do. For larger groups, touring Siquijor on a van is recommended.

Tricycle island tour itinerary
The 1,000 Php Siquijor island tour via tricycle will bring you to the following Siquijor tourist attractions:
St. Francis of Assisi Church
This is the first stop of the tricycle island tour. St. Francis of Assisi church is actually few meters away from Siquijor port. This is probably the most popular landmark in Siquijor as it serves as a backdrop to the “Welcome to Siquijor” sign.
Next stop is the Capilay Spring Park. Located in San Juan, Siquijor, this natural spring fed swimming pool is popular among locals. Capilay Spring Park has no entrance free.
Century old balete tree and fish foot spa

Interestingly enough, the cold spring also serves as a fish spa. Surprisingly, they have this huge fishes that will surely tickle and nibble your feet. Environmental fee is 5 Php.
San Isidro Labradaor Church
Located in Lazi, Siquijor, this century old church was built by the Augustinian recollects in the latter part of 19th century.
Across the San Isidro Labrador church is the Lazi Convent. Completed and blessed in 1891, Lazi convent is one of the biggest and oldest convent in the Philippines. This convent was declared as one of the historical landmarks of the Philippines in 1970’s. Unfortunately, the convent is under renovation when we visited Lazi.

There are no direct flights from Iloilo City to Bacolod City. The only means to get to Bacolod City from Iloilo City is by sea. The fastest, most convenient and most practical option is by a fastcraft ferry. Geographically, both cities are just 43.78 kilometers apart. Distance is equal to 23.63 nautical miles. With a fastcraft ferry, travel time is only 1 hour to 2 hours.
From Iloilo City, hail a taxi going to Iloilo River Wharf. Note that there are three seaports in Iloilo. The Dumangas Port, Iloilo port and the Iloilo River Wharf. The latter is where fastcrafts to Bacolod are docked. Just inform the taxi driver to bring you to the port.
There are three fastcraft ferry companies serving passengers from Iloilo going to Bacolod (vice versa). Weesam Express, SuperCat by 2GO and OceanJet. Here are their trip schedules, travel time, fares and contact numbers:
Note that the below information are based on what I have gathered during my recent trip from Iloilo to Bacolod. These may be subject to change. I highly advise to at least contact the ferry operators before going to the port.
Oceanjet has the earliest daily trip, for some reason, they do not have the 6:05 AM trip going to Bacolod that day. I had a chance to book the earliest trip (6:30 AM) to Bacolod via Weesam Express. Terminal fee is 30 Php but I only paid 24 Php, PWD discounted rate.
There is a security check in the terminal. Unlike in Batangas port where there is a baggage x-ray machine, guards manually check the bags in Iloilo Wharf port.
I wanted to seat in a non-air-conditioned area, unfortunately the 6:30 AM fastcraft ferry bound to Bacolod did not have the economy non-aircon seats. I bought a first class ticket instead (at a PWD discounted rate).
The first class seats are located on the first level of the ferry. There are 3 LCD flat screen TVs, a mini store selling snacks and drinks, and a comfort room. The seat is comfortable for a 2 hour cruise from Iloilo to Bacolod.
Since I do not have a first class seat ticket, I am not allowed to enter the first class seats at the second level. I still managed to take a photo of the area. Well, it appears that first class seats are more comfortable.
The entire Weesum Express trip from Iloilo to Bacolod was a breeze. I felt safe throughout the trip. I just did not realize that among the three fastcraft ferries, at 2 hours, Weesum Express has the longest travel time from Iloilo to Bacolod. Nonetheless, it has the cheapest rate and is ideal for slow budget travelling.
Marco Polo Restaurant is one among the must try food place in the beautiful Siquijor island. The restaurant’s mission is to bring the passion of Italian kitchen in Siquijor. Located in municipality of San Juan, Marco Polo restaurant is just a few minute motorbike or tricycle ride from various resorts and accommodations in Siquijor.
Marco Polo Restaurant Menu
Marco Polo Restaurant is the only food place in Siquijor offering authentic Italian cuisine. On their menu are starters, pizzas, pastas and Italian breakfast. All are simple and Italian dishes at a very affordable price. They also offer various wines, liquors and cocktails.
Marco Polo restaurant’s facade is simple, clean, and laid back. It is nicely set by the beach. A Filipino feel welcomes guests to its minimalist interiors. There are wooden tables and chairs that are carefully situated across the restaurant’s kitchen and bar area. I love the open area concept of the restaurant as guests get to enjoy the fresh air and hear the relaxing sound coming from the ocean waves.
There are 2 huts outside the main restaurant that are also available for dining.
I personally love these huts as you get clear and beautiful view of the beach from here. It is best to visit Marco Polo during the sunset. Nonetheless, the morning low-tide view of the beach is also awesome!
If you want to simply relax there is a chill out zone with 2 hammocks. The entire restaurant is clean and well-maintained. I’m pretty sure that the area looks very cozy and relaxing come nighttime.
Marco Polo Restaurant Experience
Thanks to Rose, the caretaker of the lodge where we stayed, for recommending Marco Polo restaurant. As we arrived in Marco Polo Restaurant, a staff warmly greeted and welcomed us. We immediately took one of the huts while deciding which pizza and pasta to order.
Though they have Italian breakfast meals, we decided to order pizza and pasta to make sure that we get to try their specialty. I really do not dine in fancy and expensive authentic Italian restaurants in Manila so I did not have any idea which pizza to order. We seek for the help of one of the staff. She told us that their best seller is Hawaianna. Since I’m not really a fan of pizza with pineapple, we asked for another option and ordered Calabrese – topped with fresh tomato sauce, mozzarella, Italian sausage and black olives. For the pasta, we ordered Frutti di Mare, spaghetti “al dente” with mixed seafood in a light creamy white wine sauce.
Authentic Italian Pizza and Pasta
The freshly baked 12 inch Calabrese pizza and freshly cooked Frutti di Mare pasta quickly arrived. The pizza crust was not too think nor thin. It was just perfect. The crispness were just enough for the thickness of the pizza. I should say that it is by far the best pizza I have ever had during my travels! Calabrese was different from any other commercial pizzas back in Manila. It was more of a delicious homemade authentic Italian pizza to me. It was very tasty! I personally loved the fresh tomato sauce, sliced sausages and the big black sliced olives. The pasta was a surprise. I forgot that I was in an authentic Italian restaurant and expected for a typical Pinoy white sauce. Nonetheless, I find the pasta very tasty and delicious! Truly an authentic Italian pasta.
As we were enjoying our meal, Sir Guilio – the friendly owner of Marco Polo restaurant, checked us out and asked how’s the food. He told us that he approached because he has seen me enjoying eating pasta. We then started chatting and became instant buddies. He was so kind to even share some information as to where his pizza ingredients come from. I learned that the ingredients he use come from Italy, Australia and of course the Philippines. Before leaving the restaurant, he even asked me for my blogsite. I hope he will be able to read this post.
Marco Polo also offers delivery within the municipality of San Juan. Delivery hotline is 09778405399.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay in Marco Polo Restaurant. The foods are delicious! The restaurant’s ambiance was really good. The service was superb. We felt like more of guests than customers. I would highly recommend Marco Polo Restaurant and would definitely come back on my next Siquijor visit.
F1 Hotel Manila is the very first premier hotel in Bonifacio Global City or popularly known as BGC – a Philippine leisure, lifestyle and business hub situated in Taguig City. F1 Hotel Manila is located along the 32nd Street of Bonifacio Global City and is just a walking distance from various corporate offices, shopping malls, banks and a world-class hospital.
Since I will not be able to travel on Christmas, Jen and I decided to book a hotel for a holiday staycation instead. Since we did not want to go farther for our staycation, we considered hotels in BGC which is just a 10 minute drive from home. After comparing prices, we decided to book a room at F1 Hotel Manila.
Lobby
We arrived at F1 Hotel Manila at around 3:00 PM. The hotel’s parking was full, perhaps due to the holiday season where many guests visit F1 Hotel for their sumptuous lunch and dinner buffets. We had to temporarily park at Parkade 3 and soon transferred to the hotel’s parking later that day.
I should say that F1 Hotel Manila’s entrance is not like any other expensive hotels in Bonifacio Global City. It was simple yet modern. We approached the concierge at the hotel’s ground floor and we were courteously informed that the hotel lobby is on the 5th level.
Elevator area at the ground level
Concierge at the ground level
Lobby at the 5th level
The lobby in the 5th level was simple and modern. The check-in process was a breeze. Special thanks to F1 Hotel Manila’s front desk officer Joanne! Unlike in other hotels, I was surprised that we were given 2 key cards for our room. Joanne also provided a personalized WiFi password for our internet needs throughout out stay. Just make sure to prepare your credit card or 3,000 Php cash for the hotel’s security deposit. Don’t worry as this is refundable after check-out.
F1 Hotel Manila Deluxe Room
We stayed at room 702 which is at the end of the hallway and appears to be corner unit. As we entered the room, there was an element of surprise as there is a mini hallway leading to the main room area. I should say that I was really surprised with the interiors! The room is stylish and has this executive and businessman vibe. The grays, reds and browns perfectly complement each other resulting to a modern and classy appeal of the room.
mini living room area
F1 Hotel Manila
The king size bed and pillows were very comfortable. Pillow cases, linens and comforter were of high quality and at par with that of 5-star hotels in the metro. I personally love the soft gray headboard.
There is a life-size gray wooden dresser that come with safety box, bathrobe, iron and even fire extinguisher. Beside the dresser are the complimentary tea, coffee and creamer sachets along with complimentary water bottles. Beneath is a personal refrigerator. Across the dresser is a mini living area with a high-end sofa and table.

toilet & bath
The Deluxe room also comes with a 32 inch flat screen cable TV placed in a long desk paired with a comfortable stylish chair. The desk also serves as a work area in the room. On the other end of the desk is a stylish lamp, a welcome letter from F1 Hotel Manila, F1 Hotel Manila notepad and a booklet containing hotel’s menu and offerings.
The toilet and bath were also a surprise! The sink and the toilet are adjacent to one another. F1 Hotel Manila branded toiletries such as soaps, shampoo, conditioner, cotton buds, toothbrush, toothpaste and even a comb are provided. Just above the sink is a long mirror that covers the entire length of the bathroom. The shower area is separated by a glass door. The rainfall shower is my favorite!
Aside from the cozy and upscale ambiance, the floor to ceiling glass window sets this F1 Hotel Room apart from other upscale hotels I have been to. Despite of this, the room does not get hot during daytime due to the floor to ceiling curtains and not to mention the strategic location of its air-conditioning unit.

Overall, we enjoyed our F1 Hotel Manila staycation. The hotel did not disappoint. The hotel staff, from the security guards to front desks are very welcoming and accommodating. The room was very stylish, classy and cozy. The breakfast buffet was good. I would highly recommend this hotel not just for a staycation but also for business and corporate travelers who are visiting Bonifacio Global City.
