Budget Hotel in Tagaytay: Crisanta’s Bed and Breakfast

Since Jen (my Tagaytay travel buddy) and I were on a tight budget, we have set our target to book the cheapest yet decent accommodation for our overnight stay in Tagaytay. We started strolling around the city and came across a couple of hotels, inns and motels, ranging from 800 Php (non-airconditioned rooms) to 1,400 Php (airconditioned rooms). We tried to check as many inns as we could and soon decided that the most decent and cheapest place to stay was Crisanta’s Bed and Breakfast.

Location

Crisanta’s Bed and Breakfast is located along Nasugbu-Tagaytay road and is right across one of the tourist destination in Tagaytay, The Residence Inn Zoo or Zoori.

Due to its affordability, Crisanta’s Bed and Breakfast easily gets fully-booked during weekends. We arrived at Crisanta’s at noon and was advised by Che, the hotel’s receptionist, that rooms will be available at 5:00 PM. Since it was only our choice of accommodation, Jen and I decided to visit Twin Lakes while waiting for the check-in time.

The Room

Standard Room B

We took the Standard Room B for only 1,100 Php. It was very clean and fairly decent. It was a typical budget traveler/solo backpacker accommodation. There is a small LCD TV serving local channels. Also, there is no wifi in the hotel but mobile data in the area if fairly good. The toilet and bath is quite spacious and clean but will give you a rustic feel. It will not be an issue for budget travelers and backpackers. We always get what we pay for, right?

The Grand Surprise

When we checked-in at around 5:00 PM, the hotel’s common area looked ordinary to me. Well, except for the grand staircase situated on the right side of the ground floor.

Crisanta’s Bed and Breakfast was the cheapest yet decent accommodation we’ve found in Tagaytay and I was not really expecting something grand from it. And then the evening came. When Jen and I went out of our room, we were literally surprised by the elegance of the hotel’s common area.

Who would have thought that a cheap hotel accommodation would have this elegant common area for their guests?

The hotel’s simple and ordinary ambiance during daytime surprisingly turns into an elegant and romantic area during the evening.

Complimentary Breakfast

All rooms come with 2 complimentary breakfast served from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM. As expected, just like any other hotels, the serving was not generous. Good thing we had a super early breakfast outside the hotel that morning before visiting Tagaytay’s People’s Park in the Sky. Nonetheless, the food was okay and I loved the kapeng barako they served along the meal.

The hotel maybe understaffed but they try to do their best to serve the guests. I would commend Che, Crisanta’s Bed and Breakfast receptionist, for being friendly and accommodating to us.

If you are travelling Tagaytay on a budget, I should say that Crisanta’s Bed and Breakfast is the most decent among the few cheap accommodations in the city.

Where to Stay in Lucena: Star Garden Tower Hotel

Star Garden Tower Hotel is situated right in the heart of Lucena City, Quezon Province. Located along Quezon Avenue, this nine-storey mid range hotel just few meters to convenience stores, fast foods, schools and a local shopping mall. Star Garden Tower Hotel is also a few minute jeepney ride away to various Lucena City landmarks such as the Lucena Perez Park, Quezon Convention Center and Quezon Provincial Government office.

It was during the Pahiyas Festival when we arrived in Lucena City. Me and Jen (my Pahiyas Festival travel buddy) who I met for the fist time didn’t reserve any hotel/lodge prior to our Lucban trip. I was too confident that everything will go well, just like my any other DIY trips where I did not bother to reserve accommodations. When we arrived in Lucena, I started calling hotels in Lucban inquiring for room availability. From one call to another, I was not getting not so good response from the attendants as all hotels were fully booked! Well, I did not anticipate that we are attending one of the biggest festivals in the Philippines and hotels in Lucban easily get fully booked during the season. Since we were already in Lucena, a gateway to Lucban, I decided to check Agoda and other hotel booking sites for hotels in Lucena. Unfortunately, all listed Lucena hotels were also also fully booked! Too my desperation, I continuously searched for hotels in the internet and found Mercado motel along Lucena’s Quezon Avenue.

Since I was concerned of my company and I wouldn’t want her to experience sleeping in a cheap motel (especially that it was our first time to travel together), I was still hoping to see a decent accommodation where we could spend the night in Lucena. Luckily, on our way to Mercado motel, we passed by Star Garden Tower Hotel. We immediately alighted the jeepney and headed to the hotel.

As we entered the modern architecture of the hotel, we were greeted by Gladys, a very welcoming and pleasant attendant of Star Garden Tower Hotel. We immediately inquired and were informed that there will be one available twin bed room by noon time. Me and Jen did not hesitate to pay for the room to make sure that we’ll have a decent place to rest and sleep after visiting Lucban.

Since we were too early for check-in and we wanted to be in Lucban as early as possible, we left our backpacks to Glady’s and we immediately left for Lucban.

After enjoying the Pahiyas Festival in Lucban, we headed back to Star Garden Tower Hotel in Lucena.

I was expecting that the room would be decent and it did not disappoint. The room was clean and spacious. The air conditioning unit was working perfectly. There was only a medium-sized pillow and a throw-pillow for each bed, nonetheless the bed was really comfortable. The room has an LCD cable TV and beneath it is a mini refrigerator that comes with a 2 complimentary bottled water. There was a fairly sized closet with a mirror right in the corner of the room. A frosted glass door separates the clean and spacious toilet and bath to the bedroom. The hotel wifi signal was strong and the internet speed was decent.

Since the hotel is in a province, Star Garden Tower hotel did not give me that rustic feel that I felt in some other hotels situated in provinces. A 2,500+ Php room is quite pricey for a budget traveler like me but I then realized that it is a twin bedroom and I have someone with me to share the room expense. A 1,250+ Php comfortable and decent room situated in the city center is not bad at all.

The customer service was excellent! the hotel staff were welcoming, friendly and accommodating. Gladys, the front desk was very pleasant. We asked her instructions and asked for her recommendations on how to get around and where to go around the city. She knows what customer service is!

The hotel also has a Sky Bar/Sky Lounge that offers fine drinks and sounds at night. In the morning, the lounge serves as the area for guests’ complimentary breakfast. Speaking of which, the complimentary breakfast was okay but may not be enough for those who eat heavy breakfast.

Being in a location where most of the business establishments in Lucena are situated, this is an ideal hotel for businessmen and travelling professionals who has transactions and business to do in Lucena city. If you are a budget traveler and is willing to pay for a minimum of 1,800 Php for a night, I would definitely recommend Star Garden Tower Hotel.

5 Reasons Why You Should Visit The Next Pahiyas Festival

The San Isidro Pahiyas festival or popularly known as the Pahiyas Festival is one among the most awaited and celebrated Festival in the Philippines. Held every 15th of May in Lucban, Quezon Province, Pahiyas Festival is Lucban’s form of thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest in honor of San Isidro de Labrador, patron saint of farmers. The festival is pegged as the fiesta that ends all fiestas because of its unique festival of colors showcased thru the beautifully adorned Lucban houses.

I was lucky to experience the recent Pahiyas Festival. It was my first time to attend a huge Philippine festival and I must say that the Pahiyas did not disappoint!

If you missed the Pahiyas festival 2016, here are my top 5 reasons why you should visit the next year’s festival:

1. The Colorfully Adorned Houses

If you watch Philippine tourism videos, you will definitely not miss seeing the colorfully adorned houses of the Pahiyas Festival. The annual Pahiyas Festival is truly one among the most popular and colorful event in the country.

Every year, Lucban households decorate their houses with Kiping accented with farm products such as rice, vegetables and fruits. Kipings are made of ground rice flour that are shaped using leaves. Interestingly enough, these colorful decorations are edible! Locals usually form a chandelier out of the kipings which is known as Arangya. Huge flowers made up of Kipings are also a common decor in the colorfully adorned Lucban houses.

Tip: Stay until evening where the already beautifully designed houses turn glorious. Sadly, my camera ran out of battery before sunset and I missed taking photos of the houses during that evening.

2. Pahiyas Festival Parade

Upon checking one house after the other, me and Jen (my company during the Pahiyas) reached the public market area. We were surprised that a parade was about to start few meters from us. I was delighted and immediately looked for a good spot before the parade passes us.

The parade started with a street dance in the tune of “It’s more fun in the Philippines” and the “Pahiyas festival song”. It was very festive that I did not bother the scorching heat of the sun. The parade was preceded by “Parikitan” where young ladies and gents paraded on their intricately designed Filipiniana attire. There was also a Gayak Karosa where beautifully designed carts were being pulled by Carabaos. There were also marching bands, majorettes and Gigantes of Lucban.

Tip: The parade starts at 2:00 PM and lasts for about an hour.

3. Lucban’s Pancit Habhab

Apart from the annual Pahiyas, Lucban is also famous for its Pancit Habhab. You can have a taste of this delicious Lucban pancit all year round as Lucban restaurants and eateries offer this delicious pancit. But having Pancit Habhab prepared by a Lucban household is quite an experience. It’s like eating a non-commercialized and an authentic “lutong bahay” prepared by Lucbaueno nanays and lolas.

Tip: During Pahiyas, there is a household selling pancit habhab in almost every street of Lucban. How much per order? Only 10 Php!

4. The Edible Kiping!

Few minutes after arriving in Lucban, I was wondering if I could just pick a kiping from one of the houses as I badly wanted to taste it. Good thing that I was able to control myself as we found out that there were a few household selling these colorful and edible Pahiyas decors. We tried the fried kiping for only 15Pesos per order. It was like a chicharon but was a bit tasteless since it is made of rice flour. To add flavor, sugar is sprinkled in fried kiping.

Tip: Don’t dare pick kiping to any of the houses lol

5. The Pahiyas Festival Experience

I have not been to any other major and grand Philippine festivals so I could not compare if Pahiyas is the grandest and most celebrated. I could not also say if it is the annual festival that ends all other festivals in the country. But one thing for sure, Pahiyas Festival is truly an event that Filipinos should be proud of. It was an overwhelming experience to be part of a grand thanksgiving celebration.

No wonder why Pahiyas Festival is always included in Philippine tourism promotional videos. With its colorful houses, festive parade, friendly locals and delicious foods, Pahiyas Festival is truly one of the reasons why it is more fun in the Philippines!

5 Reasons Why Davao City Is a Tourist Friendly Destination

With 81 provinces and 7,107 islands, the Philippines is indeed blessed with countless amazing tourist destinations. Davao City is one among the long list of must see places in the Philippines. Located in Mindanao, Davao City is the center of trade and commerce of Davao region and is one of the most progressive cities in the Philippines.

During my short yet memorable DIY tour in Davao City, I could not help but compare Davao City to other tourist destinations in the Philippines. Here are my top 5 reasons why I find Davao city a tourist friendly destination:

1. Davao City Airport is the 6th Most Efficient Airport in The World

In 2015, Francisco Bangoy International Airport or popularly known as Davao City Airport was awarded by Airport Council International (ACI) as the 6th most efficient airport in the world.

ACI is an organization that acts as the voice of the world’s airports and the communities they serve, and promotes professional excellence in airport management and operations.

2. Davao City is the 9th Safest City in the World

In 2015, Davao City was ranked 9th safest city in the world. Being the largest city in the Philippines in terms of land area, with its good governance, Davao has managed become the safest city in the Philippines and eventually the 9th safest city in the world. The peace and order in Davao city is credited to Mayor Rodrigo Roa Duterte.

I stayed in a relatively cheap motel with no security guards. The only person manning the front desk is an old lady who owns the place. I was a bit hesitant to check-in until I realized that I was actually in the safest city in the Philippines!

There is no “you always have to look at your back” factor when walking alone in the city, be it during daytime or late at night. Davaoenos and tourists alike can freely walk in the streets without worrying about their security. At night, police mobiles patrol the Davao streets to ensure the city’s peace and order is maintained. I experienced walking alone late at night and felt very secured. Besides the roving police mobiles, the entire city is also equipped with hundreds of CCTV cameras. It is the one and only city in the Philippines that has a command center dedicated for the people’s safety and security (Public Safety and Security Command Center).

3. Davao City Cab Drivers Give Exact Change!

If you are living in Manila, you have surely experienced choosy cab drivers or experienced being charged on top of the metered fare. These kind of disappointing cab drivers are nowhere to be found in Davao City!

If you pay more than the metered fare, a Davao City cab driver will surely hand you the exact change. It is not surprising why Davaoeños still prefer cabs over Uber or Grab as their very own cab drivers also provide superb customer service.

4. Davao City Values Senior Citizens and PWDs

Being a Person with disability (PWD) myself, I rarely use my PWD discount card during my out of town trips. This is to at least help small local businesses in the province that I am visiting.

It was only in Davao I was given a PWD discount without me asking for one. On my way to the Philippine Eagle Conservation Center, I was surprised that the van driver asked me transfer in the front seat – a reserved seat for PWDs and Senior Citizens in jeepneys, vans and buses in Davao City. He also discounted my fare to Malagos, a baranggay where Philippine Eagle Conservation Center is located. During my second day, I made a quick visit at Davao Crocodile Park and was automatically given a PWD discount by the front desk personnel.

5. Davaoeños are Friendly and Disciplined

Along with Iloilo City and Ilocos Sur’s Vigan City, I am putting Davao City on my top 3 list of friendliest places I’ve visited. Everyone in the city was friendly and was willing to help any traveler DIY-ing Davao City. I was able to visit several tourist destinations by merely asking locals for tips and directions. I survived my DIY Davao tour without using google maps!

What is more amazing is the discipline Davaoeños show. In public transportation terminals, people fall in line properly. You will not see a single Davaoeño littering or spitting in the city streets. There are no jaywalkers in Davao as people cross the streets on pedestrian lanes. I have not seen any vehicle beating the red light. Drivers strictly abide the 30 KM/hour speed limit in the Davao City downtown area. At bars, last order of alcoholic drinks is at 1 AM and all convenience stores do not sell alcoholic drinks beyond 2 AM. You will not see any tambays drinking or minors loitering around past 12 AM. Being a no-smoking city, people do not smoke in public places.

Being a solo traveler, I always look forward in seeing beautiful places, befriending locals, and learning different cultures. But traveling alone entails danger. Most of the time, you will just have to use common sense to secure yourself. Like you, I had a share of not so good experiences in some places I visited (overpriced fares for tourists, security concerns). Just like my previous trips, I flew to Davao city thinking that it was like any other cities I’ve visited. I was wrong. I went back to Manila realizing that it is possible to live in a safe and progressive city with law-abiding citizens secured by an exemplary leadership.

Golden Crown Restaurant at BBB Valenzuela City

Located along McArthur highway in BBB, Marulas, Golden Crown Food Center is becoming a popular food destination in Valenzuela City.

I remember that a friend from QC once asked me about this Chinese restaurant, I wasn’t sure as I’ve never heard and was clueless of it. Masarap daw food dun at mura pa. Dinatayo yung Golden Crown! He said. It intrigued me but I still wasn’t able to visit the restaurant to try their food.. until one day my mom brought home Pancit Canton and Calamares from Golden Crown Food Center.

It was a Sunday when I told my mom that we’ll just buy lunch at Golden Crown. She asked me to call the restaurant to place my order as it tends to be fully occupied during weekends. I called the restaurant, placed my order and was told that the food will be ready for pick-up in 30 minutes.

Unlike some restaurants in Valenzuela, the small facade of Golden Crown is no eye-catching. Being a Valenzuelano, I did not realize that there is such a restaurant in Marulas.

If you are into high-end restaurants, Golden Crown will disappoint you. The facade and the interior is no fancy. Chairs are mono blocks and tables are nothing special. Nonetheless, the restaurant is air-conditioned. It reminds me of typical Binondo Chinese restaurants where the dining areas and the overall look and ambiance of the restaurant is plain and simple. If you want a bit high-end dining experience in Valenzuela, try Little Beijing Restaurant.

We arrived at BBB, Marulas at 2:00 PM and it was surprising that there were still a number of people dining and all the staff of the restaurant were very busy. True enough, this restaurant is frequently visited by its patrons!

I went straight to the take out area to claim my order. I was greeting by a very welcoming and kind staff of the restaurant. Since our food is for pick-up, we did not stay long and left immediately.

Unfortunately, they do not offer food delivery. Alternatively, you can call the restaurant to order and they will immediately prepare the foods for pick-up. I learned from the staff that they also cater receptions for events such as weddings, baptismal sand birthday parties.

DIY: 24 Hours in Lake Sebu South Cotabato

Lake Sebu is a natural lake located in the municipality of Lake Sebu in South Cotabato. Apart from its significance in the irrigation system of Southern Mindanao, with its serene atmosphere and relaxing views, Lake Sebu is becoming one of the tourist attraction in region.

Quick facts about the municipality of Lake Sebu:

With a population of 85,000, 60% of Lake Sebu inhabitants are T’bolis followed by other indigenous tribes such as Tirurays and Ubos. In this Mindanao municipality, surprisingly enough, 26% of the inhabitants are Ilonggos.
With a surface area of 356 hectares, Lake Sebu is largest lake in the municipality. The other two are Lake Siloton (48 hectares) and Lake Lahit (24 hectares).
The municipality has 12 islets and the largest of which is isla Tbowow, a crocodile shaped islet.
Elevated at approximately 1,000 meters above sea level, Lake Sebu can be as cool as 23 °C during night-time. With this, Lake Sebu is pegged as the summer destination in Southern Mindanao.

Looking back on my failed Western Visayas trip where I was only able to visit 3 provinces in 5 days (Iloilo, Capiz and Aklan), I challenged myself again to visit 3 Southern Mindanao provinces in 4 days – Lake Sebu, Davao and South Cotabato.

Journey from Davao to Lake Sebu

Since I flew from Manila to Davao, I had to travel from Davao City to Lake Sebu by land. I left Davao city at around 8 AM and arrived in Lake Sebu at 2 PM. It was definitely a long and tiring travel but the journey was worth it. Please visit my separate post on how to get to Lake Sebu from Manila, Davao or Gensan.

Day 1 – Afternoon

Right before setting my foot to Lake Sebu, I met Maricel, Larry and Anna in the Denmark van terminal where vans from Surralah are headed to Lake Sebu. They were very welcoming and accommodating that we became instant friends while waiting for the van to leave for Lake Sebu.

My new-found Tboli friends hurriedly showed me lake Sebu’s landmark which features the municipality mayor. The landmark is relatively new as it was completed last 2015.

After taking photos of the landmark, Maricel looked for a habal-habal driver to bring me to Punta Isla Resort. Fare from the landmark to Punta Isla is only 10 Php.

Punta Isla Resort Day Tour

Based on blog and tripadvisor reviews, Punta Isla is the best resort in Lake Sebu. When I arrived at Punta Isla, there was an ongoing retreat of high-school students and all rooms were occupied. Since I did not have any reservations, I just asked the receptionist If I can stroll and check the resort. With only 30 entrance, I was allowed to get inside the beautiful Punta Isla.

After spending an hour checking on Punta Isla, I asked a habal-habal driver to bring me to the nearest accommodation. He brought me Mountain Log Resort. Fare from Punta Isla to Mountail Log is only 10 Php.

I was a bit disappointed since I really wanted to stay at Punta Isla and I was clueless about Mountain Log resort. I haven’t actually seen it in photos or read reviews about.

Since I was alone, the supposedly 900 Php twin bed room was discounted to 800 Php. Thanks to the very kind and welcoming staff of the resort!

To my surprise the rooms at Mountain log are literally few meters away from the lake! The room was not something to rave about. Nonetheless, the serene and peaceful surroundings compensate to the simple and plain accommodations in the resort.

I soon learned from Larry and his friend (who happens to be one of the resort’s staff) that most foreign visitors stay in this resort. Compared to other resorts/accommodation in Lake Sebu which at times get too crowded, Mountain Log resort is ideal to those who want a more private and peaceful stay in Lake Sebu.

It was so relaxed that I spent the entire afternoon in the resort enjoying the views and watching locals paddling their Owing boats. It was truly a unique experience to witness how simple life is in Lake Sebu.

Day 1 – Evening

Dinner at a beautiful Lake Sebu Restaurant

I made sure that I get to dine in the best restaurant in Lake Sebu. Since Punta Isla was fully booked, the receptionist advised that they may not accommodate me for dinner.

I asked Larry and Maricel instead where is the best place to eat in area, they did not hesitate to suggest Bob Nowong.

Sometimes the best way to experience new places is by getting to know its locals. While having dinner, Maricel and Larry shared stories about Tbolis’ heritage and culture. I must say that it was one of the memorable and meaningful dinner I ever had during my solo travels. That night I returned to the resort with deep appreciation of the indigenous people particularly the T’bolis.

Day 2 – Morning

Larry was so kind that he arranged a habal-habal and literaly toured me around. I learned that he used to be a tourist guide in Lake Sebu and offered to tour me for free! I just paid 600 Php for the habal-habal service to visit all the places during the second-half of my stay in Lake Sebu.

I informed Larry of my plan to leave Lake Sebu after lunch as I was planning to visit Gumasa in Glan Sarangani in the afternoon. Due to the limited time, I had to be selective of the places to visit and just asked for Larry’s expertise.

I invited Larry and Onyok (habal-habal driver) to join me for breakfast. After having a clubhouse and 2 cups of coffee, we started touring Lake Sebu. With a limited time, below are the places we were able to visit the entire day:

Lemobung Lodge Visit

We first visited Lemobung Lodge, a government-owned resort in Lake Sebu. According to Larry, Lemobung lodge has the cheapest rates in Lake Sebu.

Apart from Bob Nowong, Mountain Lake Eco-Resort’s restaurant is frequently visited by the tourists.

COWHED

After visiting 2 resorts, Larry told me that we are heading to COWHED. I initially thought of cow head. I’m not an animal lover but literally seeing cow heads does not sound fun to me. As in ulo ng kalabaw I asked Larry. He immediately responded hindi po sir.. cooperative po siya. To my relief, I said okay punta na tayo dun.

COWHED or Cooperative of Women in Health and Development is an organization that promotes Lake Sebu’s arts and crafts. The Tboli house inspired store of COWHED is a must visit if you want to check out Tboli items and buy souvenirs for your Lake Sebu tour.

According to Larry, all Tboli items in COWHED are crafted and made by the Tbolis from various baranggays in Lake Sebu.

I was lucky that I’m being toured by Larry. Apart from the beautiful Tboli items at the COWHED souvenir shop, he explained the significance and use of almost all of the Tboli items in the store. He even showed me how to play several Tboli instruments.

Sludoy is a 5-string zither made of Bamboo.

Kumbing

Kumbing is a bamboo mouth harp. According to Larry, this is used by Tbolis to call spirits to get the moonlight back.

This Tboli instrument is a a two stringed boat lute used by Tibolis on different occasions and gatherings.

One among the many traditional Tboli arts is jewelry making. These colorful necklaces are made from beads.

Visit Tboli Museum

Just few minutes away from COWHED is the Tboli museum. This traditional Tboli house turned museum is originally owned by Bai Baay. The museum showcases the rich culture of the Tboli tribe, the indigenous people of Lake Sebu.

The gongs are indication of Tboli’s passion for music and the craft of brass casting.

The entrance of a T’boli house faces the kitchen. This is to show visitors how accommodating and welcoming T’bolis are.

Interestingly enough, the windows of a Tboli house is awning-type. They are opened and serve as shelves during daytime.

There are many priceless items in Tboli museum, each of which has a story about the heritage and culture of Tibolis. Entrance fee in Tboli museum is only 10 Php.

After touring 2 resorts and having a cultural tour in COWHED and Tboli museum, we headed to Sunrise Garden resort for lunch.

Day 2 – Afternoon

Visit Bundos Fara

I once watched Sir Bundos Fara on a national TV documentary. He is one of the few artisans of Lake Sebu who still practices the art of brass making. I was intrigued by his story and the dying brass making tradition of Lake Sebu. I requested Larry and our habal-habal driver if we could drop by at Sir Bundos’ place.

The moment we arrived, we were greeted by Sir Bundos. “Sayang kahapon nagbabrass-casting ako” he said.

I was a bit saddened not to see him brass casting, however, I felt his excitement when I mentioned that I saw him on TV and just want to drop by. He immeditely went inside his house, after few minutes he went back with a plastic containing some of his works.

Using the traditional way of brass casting, a piece of intricate and beautiful brass casted item can take up to 2 days to create.

Sir Bundos told me that craftsmen usually place their names on their works. Someone from Manila ordered this particular piece.

Visit 7 Falls

Apart from the relaxing and scenic view of Lake Sebu, this municipality is famous for its 7 falls. Located in Baranggay Lake Seloton, this tourist attraction is just few minutes habal-habal ride from Lake Sebu’s resorts and accommodations.

The first of the series of seven falls is the 35ft waterfalls “Hikong Alo”.

I learned from my newly found Tboli friend that only 2 of the 7 falls can be reached by foot. Visitors who want to see the rest of the falls could hike or simply enjoy the falls from a zipline point of view.

Sadly, since I was pressed of time, I opted not to take the zipline due to the long queue of tourists in line. I would definitely try this on my next visit to Lake Sebu.

There are many things to do and places to visit in Lake Sebu. Sadly, I only allotted 24 hours for my Lake Sebu DIY tour. I could have stayed longer but I have to stick with my plan that I had to skip other tourist spots in this beautiful Southern Mindanao municipality. I promised myself that I would definitely visit again as there are still many items on my Lake Sebu to do list.

Located in Baranggay Matictic in the municipality of Norzagaray, Bakas river is one among Bulacan’s underrated tourist attraction. Bakas is a Filipino word which literally means a trace or a mark.

Brief history of Bakas river: According to locals, the story behind Bakas river is that the legendary Bernardio Carpio set foot in Matictic leaving a huge foot print/trace on one of the limestone rock formation. The other footprint is said to be in Biak na Bato in San Miguel, Bulacan.

Bakas river has giant limestone rock formations with 3 huge statues of Jesus Christ and a statue of Holy Trinity-Virgin Mary. This makes Bakas river a unique and perfect getaway for travelers, adventurers and religious pilgrims.

Spotted several kids rock jumping in the clear and fast flowing waters of Bakas. Apart from these kids, also spotted are the vandals in the rocks. I hope visitors and locals alike should stop scribbling on these naturally beautiful rocks.

When I visited Bakas river, I noticed the strong current of water nearby the rock formations. Alternatively, on the other side of the river, water is more calm and is safe for swimming. For visitors’ safety, warning signs can been in the area about the unpredictability of the river’s current and water levels.

I was really fascinated by the clean waters of the river. And not to mention the fresh air and its lush green scenery.

Since the place is not developed for tourism, there is no entrance fee to get in the riverside. However, cottages can be rented for only 200 Php a day. I learned from a local that these cottages don’t usually last for a year. Every time a strong typhoon hits Bulacan, these cottages are destroyed and washed along by the river.

There are only a few sari-sari stores in Bakas and these are all located on the farther area of the riverside. I would highly suggest to bring your own food as stores only have limited items for sale.

When to Visit Bakas River

According to locals, the best time to visit the river is during summer. Just avoid visiting the place during the Lenten season. Besides the fact that there is a huge number of visitors during holy week, there are also stories about the river being too dangerous during the season. It is also not advisable to visit Bakas river during bad weather as water in the river easily rises.

How to Get to Bakas River

From EDSA northbound, take a Del Carmen bus bound to Garden. From there, take a jeepney to Garay and tell the driver to drop you off at St.Andrew church. Hail a tricycle and tell that you are going to Bakas river. Tricycle fare is 300 pesos for a two-way ride.

Cheap Accommodation in Davao City: Iron Inn

Iron Inn Lodge is one among the many backpacker budget accommodation in Davao city.

After enjoying Glan in Sarangani Province, I immediately headed to Davao City. I arrived at Ecoland bus terminal around 8:00 PM and asked some locals where is the cheapest accommodation in the area. A street vendor pointed me to Iron Inn Lodge.

If you are travelling by bus to General Santos, Tacurong, Bukidnon, Koronadal, Cotabato, Butuan, Cagayan de Oro or Matim, this budget accommodation is a perfect place to have a quick rest as it is just few meters away from the Ecoland Bus Terminal.

From outside, Iron Inn’s facade looks like a boutique hostel accommodation. The colorful stained glasses makes this affordable Davao accommodation more appealing.

When I arrived in the lodge, I was welcomed by an old lady along with their 2 grandchildren. The old lady is the owner of Iron Inn and her grandchildren help her accommodate guests.

With their affordable rates, Iron Inn is undoubtedly a motel in Davao city. After my motel experiences in the past, (staying overnight in Iloilo’s Dragon Lodge and Roxas City’s Premiere Inn) the experience was not bad at all. Besides, safety was not an issue as I was in Davao City – the 8th safest city in the world!

For only 700 Php for 24 hours, I did not hesitate to check-in. I was a bit confused as the owner did not hand me the room key. Instead, she instructed her grandchild to open the room for me.

The room itself is quite spacious for a solo backpacker. The bed is queen size and the room comes with an air-conditioning unit and a TV. It’s quite odd the room walls are tiles. I felt like I was inside a toilet. Nonetheless, the entire room and the toilet and bath is very clean.

The next morning, the owner offered me to simply add 300 Php for another night in Ironn Inn. Too bad it was my last day in Davao City.

Well, this is the cheapest accommodation I’ve been to during my Lake Sebu-Sarangani-Davao City DIY tour. With only less than 1,000 Pesos a night, the place is generally clean and truly a budget Davao city accommodation! Visiting Davao City? Check hotels HERE

5 Things To Do in Roxas City Aside From Eating Seafoods

Roxas City, Capiz is known as the Seafood Capital of the Philippines. Located in Western Visayas, Roxas City is 3 hours away from Iloilo City and an hour and a half way from Kalibo, Aklan.

I was very excited to visit Roxas City. As usual, having no concrete plans makes the adventure more exciting. After touring Iloilo City and the town of Miag-ao in Iloilo, I was ready to visit the seafood capital of the Philippines!

Aside from eating sea foods, here are the 5 things to do if you are backpacking in Roxas City, Capiz:

1. Night strolling at Roxas City proper

I was looking for a hotel in the heart of Roxas City. Luckily, I landed in Roxas President’s Inn which is just few meters away from the city center.

Surprisingly enough, Roxas City is beautiful especially at night. With the absence of high-rises and modern structures, the city is very simple yet looks very elegant.

Was first built in 1698, Immaculate Concepcion Metropolitan cathedral was destroyed by a typhoon and was rebuilt in 1728.

I enjoyed my night strolling at the city proper. The place is relatively small and you can actually walk around the city center and check out the old structures in 20 minutes. The entire place is safe too.

2. Visit Roxas City People’s Park (Baybay)

This is another surprise as I did not expect that there is a park by the bay in Roxas city. Like the city proper, the park itself is simple but truly a must visit if you want to simply relax and breathe fresh air.

Roxas City People’s park is Capiz’ version of Manila Bay. Well, except the fact that this park is undoubtedy cleaner and the bay is unpolluted.

It was fun to watch Capiznons enjoying the bay. Baybay beach water may not be as clear as Sarangani’s, nonetheless it is very clean and abundant of marine life.

There is a long walkway by the bay and there are also benches in the area for the park visitors.

This is my favorite spot in Baybay. In fact, I visited here 3 times during my 3 day visit in Roxas city. Aside from the fresh sea breeze, Roxas City People’s Park or Baybay is also known for its seafood restaurants. How to get to Capiz People’s Park or Baybay

From the city proper, ride a tricycle and ask the driver To bring you to Baybay. A special tricycle trip costs 40-50 Php. Travel time from the city proper to Baybay is approximately 5 minutes.

3. Visit Panay Church and See the Largest Catholic bell church in Asia

Santa Monica Parish church or popularly known as Panay church or Pan-ay church is actually located in the town of Panay in Capiz and is only 30 minute tricycle ride from Roxas City proper.

Panay church is a popular Roxas City tourist spot as it is the home of the largest Catholic bell church in Asia.

Built in 1774, Panay church has a 5 storey belfry where the largest Catholic bell church in Asia can be found. Made up of white coral stone, Panay church is built-in a colonial baroque with neo-classical influence architecture.

It was a Sunday when I visited Pan-ay and I arrived few minutes before the last morning mass ended.

When I arrived inside the church, I started looking for the entrance of the belfry. I asked a local how do I get upstairs to see the gigantic bell and I was pointed to the admin office where a guide was waiting.

According to Ariel, the tour guide, the belfry used to be open for public but the church admin had to keep it locked to secure the bells. He unlocked the gate of the belfry and we started climbing to the top.

I was stunned to see the gigantic bell being sorrounded by smaller bells. According to Ariel, the largest bell is made up of 70 sacks of gold and silver coins donated by the locals. It was built in 1878 and measured 7 feet in diameter, 5 feet in height and weighs 400 Kilograms.

Apart from the largest bell, the belfry is also home of the 8 smaller bells. According to the guide, each bell is used for different occasions and events. For instance, a particular bell is used for when a wedding ceremony is being held.

How to get to Pan-ay Church?

From Roxas city proper, ride a tricycle and inform the driver to bring you to Panay church. Travel time is approximately 30 minutes. Fare is approximately 200 Php to 400 Php for one way trip.

4. Visit Weny’s Garden

After visiting Pan-ay church and seeing its bells, I asked the tricycle driver to bring me to Weny’s butterfy garden. The garden is 5 minute tricycle ride away from Pan-ay church.

When we arrived, I was greeted by sir Weny, the owner of the garden. He looked very happy and delighted to see someone visiting his garden.

“Taga saan ka sir”, he asked. I immediately replied, “From Manila po”. “Buti nagvisit ka dito sa Capiz. Di ka ba natatakot sa aswang?” he said jokingly. I replied in a soft voice, “meron po ba?”. He actually did not respond as he was hurriedly directing me inside his butterfly garden.

Instead of feeling scared, I felt sad for Capiz. Tourists and travelers avoid this beautiful province due to its reputation. I just realized it by merely looking at sir Weny, he was very happy that someone from Manila came to visit his garden. I asked him how often he gets visitors to his garden. He said that he gets maximum of 4 visits a week and not all visitors are from outside Capiz.

Sir Weny was very accommodating. All throughout the tour, he kept on sharing facts and information about the butterflies and plants in the garden. I didn’t know that butterflies have a short lifespan and can only live up to a month.

Sir Weny also provided a quick lecture about the life stages of a butterfly. I already forgot my science back in elementary school.lol
There are actually many species of butterflies in the garden and this is only the good shot I got.

Apart from the butterflies, Sir Weny also has a wide array of plants and flowers in his garden.

5. Visit President Manual Roxas’ Ancestral Home

Apart from being the seafood capital of the Philippines, Roxas city is also known as the hometown of Manuel Roxas, the 5th president of the Republic of the Philippines.

For some reason, the ancestral house was closed when I made a visit. I tried asking locals around but no one can tell why it was closed. Nonetheless, from the outside, the Roxas ancestral home looks well-preserved. I’ll definitely visit this place the next time I travel to Roxas City.

Overall, I enjoyed my stay in Roxas city. I know there are still many places to explore not just in the city but in the entire Capiz province. If you are visiting Roxas City, I would recommend Roxas President’s Inn hotel. Alternatively, you may check other Roxas City hotels here.

Extraordinarily Beautiful Miagao Church in Iloilo

Simbahan ng Sto. Tomas de Villanueva or popularly known as the Migao Church is one among the four Philippine churches in Baroque Romanesque architecture. Built in 1797, Miagao church was declared as a Philippine national treasure in 1963 and a UNESCO world heritage in 1993.

Located in the municipality of Miagao in Iloilo, the church has become one of Iloilo’s tourist destination. With its jaw dropping and intricately designed facade, Miagao church is truly a work of art!

The church embodies the mixture of Spanish-Filipino culture. Back in history, Miagao church was built using forced labor. Interestingly enough, the church was built using adobe, lime stones, corals and eggs.

Unfortunately, I arrived in Miagao at around 2 PM where the sunlight is almost facing the rear part of the church. The best time to visit Miagao church is during early morning as the color of its facade changes depending on the sunlight.

After taking several pictures of Miagao Church’s facade, I tried opening its front and main door to check out its interior. Unfortunately, it was closed. To my dismay, I strolled around the area hoping that i could enter the church. I was very lucky that there was an open door on one side of the church. As I entered, I was greeted by a very welcoming and accommodating man who happens to be the resident guide of Miagao church. He shared a number of facts about the church and the town of Miagao. He was very friendly and accommodating that he even took a photo of me inside the church.

The church’s interior matches its outside beauty. Miagao church’s retablo is gold plated which compliments the beautiful color of its thick walls.

I should say that the church is well maintained. This is one of the few heritage sites where the original structure is retained and preserved.

How to Get to Miagao church Iloilo

From Iloilo City proper, ride a cab to the town of Molo. From there, take a jeepney to Mohon terminal. From the terminal, ride a jeepney bound to Miagao. Total travel time from Iloilo City to Miagao church is approximately 1 hour.

So far, Miagao church is the most beautiful church I have seen not only in Iloilo but in the entire country. This extraordinarily beautiful church is a must visit if you are traveling or backpacking to Iloilo.
